A colourful collection of 29 Fimo beads from South Africa.

We call them stubbies because they resemble the shape of a short and thick stubby of beer.

And we love them for their vibrant colours and very workable squat shape.

FIMO beads were first derived from polymer clay, which was first discovered in the 1930s by a dollmaker in Germany called Fifi Rehbinder.

Unable to source her normal supplies due to the political climate of upheaval at the time, she developed a plastic clay called ‘Fifi Mosaik’ and used it to sculpt her doll heads.

It wasn’t until the mid-1960s that Rehbinder sold the formula to Eberhard Faber who tweaked the Fimo brand of polymer clay which was then primarily used as a toy for children.

As the FIMO brand entered new markets all over the world, the making of beads became a natural progression.

The beads in this collection measure10-11mm, almost square and weigh in at 25grams and work out to cost .90 cents apiece.

The pieces allow for optimum creativity and temper exciting jewellery prospects – with a generous 1.5-3mm threading hole.
